About LVAD

Individuals with heart failure are implanted with a mechanical pump known as a left ventricular assist device (LVAD). It aids in the pumping of blood from the bottom-left chamber of your heart (left ventricle) to the aorta and the rest of your body. There's a reason it's called a Left Ventricular Assist Device.

This mechanical, battery-powered device is surgically implanted in a person's chest just below the heart. The LVAD does not replace the heart; rather, it helps a heart that is too weak to pump on its own to keep pumping. The device helps the primary pumping chamber by transporting blood to the rest of the body (left ventricle).

The LVAD can help patients with severe heart failure who are not responding to medications or are waiting for a heart transplant. Patients who receive an LVAD report less fatigue, more strength, and better breathing, as well as a higher chance of survival.

Symptoms

LVAD surgery in India is a viable therapy option for some people with end-stage heart failure. If you're thinking about getting an LVAD, you'll need to be evaluated to see if it's the best option for you.

An LVAD is not the best therapy option for all patients. You may not be a good candidate for an LVAD if you have clotting issues, kidney failure, liver disease, lung disease, or infections.

Risk Factor

Every surgery carries some level of risk. Your doctor will discuss the risks associated with LVAD surgery and how we can help reduce them.

The following are some of the most common dangers:

  • Infection.
  • Strokes and Blood Clots.
  • Bleeding.
  • Right-sided Heart Failure.
  • Kidney Damage.
  • Failure of an LVAD.

Investigations

A thorough examination by a team of cardiac surgeons is required to determine if you are a candidate. Your medical examination will include several tests as well as a review by the Heart Failure Committee.

  • Electrocardiogram.
  • X-ray.
  • Bloodwork.
  • Echocardiogram.
  • Metabolic stress examination.
  • Catheterization of the heart.

Side Effects

Benefits

The LVAD improves the function of the kidneys, liver, brain, and other organs by increasing blood flow to the body; improves the patient's strength and ability to participate in activities such as cardiac rehabilitation; and allows the patient to be discharged from the hospital.

  • Longer life expectancy.
  • Improved life quality.
  • Fewer heart failure symptoms.

Success Rate

The success rate lies between 60-70%.
