About Coronary Angioplasty
Coronary Angioplasty (AN-jee-o-plas-tee) is a procedure used to open clogged heart arteries. It is also known as percutaneous coronary intervention. Angioplasty involves inserting a tiny balloon catheter into a blocked blood vessel to help widen it and improve blood flow to the heart.
Angioplasty is frequently combined with the insertion of a small wire mesh tube known as a stent. The stent keeps the artery open and reduces the likelihood of it narrowing again. Most stents are drug-coated to help keep the artery open (drug-eluting stents). Bare-metal stents are rarely used.
Angioplasty can alleviate symptoms associated with blocked arteries, such as chest pain and shortness of breath. Angioplasty is also frequently used during a heart attack to quickly open a blocked artery and reduce heart damage.
Symptoms
- Pain or discomfort in the chest (angina).
- Weakness, dizziness, nausea (feeling sick to your stomach), or cold sweat.
- Arm or shoulder pain or discomfort.
- Breathing difficulty.
Risk Factor
It is generally regarded as a safe procedure, with the risk of serious complications from a coronary angioplasty being extremely rare.
- Bruising and bleeding at the site where the catheter was inserted into the artery.
- Excessive bruising.
- The heart attack.
- Stroke.

Complications and recurrence will be reduced with the use of newer equipment. The recurrence rate after a stent is less than 10%.
